We are a small company of four artists and life-long friends with big dreams. In 2018, we founded MUKA with one goal in mind: to create more opportunities for LGBTQ+ BIPoC and AAPI communities to see themselves represented in authentic and nuanced ways.
We believe diversity should be respected and celebrated, creative expression is our most powerful ability as humans and that art has the power to inspire positive change in the world. We are building a future where all culture, skin colours and gender expressions are celebrated, where businesses like ours thrive by valuing creativity and respecting artists.
We hope you will find something that makes you feel confident and joyful in being unapologetically yourself here at MUKA.
MUKA is based in the city of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. The City of Hamilton is situated upon the traditional territories of the Erie, Neutral, Huron-Wendat, Haudenosaunee and Mississaugas. This land is covered by the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, which was an agreement between the Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabek to share and care for the resources around the Great Lakes. We further acknowledge that this land is covered by the Between the Lakes Purchase, 1792, between the Crown and the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation.
Today, the City of Hamilton is home to many Indigenous people from across Turtle Island (North America) and we recognize that we must do more to learn about the rich history of this land so that we can better understand our roles as residents, neighbours, partners and caretakers.
We stand in solidarity with murdered and missing Indigenous women, girls, transgender and two-spirit people.
The following are interpretations of the Dish with One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant. There are various interpretations, but we offer these for your information. There is also a link to information on the Between the Lakes Purchase, 1792.
